fuel pump question

I just got this car; it is a 1995 318i convertible(10/95 build date). It has been sitting for two years in a friend’s door less garage. Have already determined that the fuel pump is bad (I pulled the pump and connected it directly to a bench power source), I used a jumper wire in place of the relay and now have power at the pump plug. But with the relay installed, there is no power at the plug. I think I read that the DME relay supplies power to the pump relay. Is this only when the engine is running? How does it get start fuel?

Here’s my question, the feed and return hoses were already disconnected from the pump when I got the car. I found the feed line but cannot find the return line. I removed the cover plate from the left side sending until and it had a hose going into it. Is this the return?
Thanks

Vic
