I am in the process of a complete engine rebuild and need some help resetting the cams. To start, this is a 1997 328i sedan, E36, M52 cast iron block engine with aluminum head. Its seems the web is replete with info on how to set the cams *after* the cams have been locked at TDC. For example, article
Pelican Technical Article: BMW Camshaft Timing and Vanos Unit Installation. Great article but this one assumes the cams are already locked at TDC. In my case, I have rebuilt but the lower & upper so everything needs to be reset. I have the crankshaft locked at TDC. I now need some help positioning the exhaust & intake cams to the position they should be in before I begin assembling the sprockets. I understand the cylinder 1 exhaust cam lobe should be at approximately 1 o'clock and the intake cam lobe at approximately 11 o'clock. I also understand the square ends of the both cams in the rear are supposed to be parallel to each other... But how critical & exact are these positions? And how do I make sure they are properly set? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
