E30 318is exhaust problem

Hi All,
The end of my exhaust pipe fell/ broke off, was loud as hell, and it was going to be about $700 to replace it with an original part (I live in australia) so I took it too an exhaust workshop who welded (or something) a new pipe. Beforehand, the guy told me it would be "quiet" then clarified that with, "it will sound like the original."

So i pick it up and firstly the pipe is smaller in diameter than the old one, and the nice throaty rumble of the original one is gone. Is there anything I can do about this? and Will the smaller pipe have affected the cars performance?

Anyone in Melbourne know of a place that you'd trust to deal with this. Should I take it back, say i'm not happy with it and see if they'll do a deal in fixing it?

Thanks for any input.
