A/C removal

I'm replacing a tired M50 with a less-tired M50 in my 94 325is. The car is a track toy, and while disconnecting the AC pump I thought, "Why not pull the entire AC system while I'm in here?" The compressor hasn't been used for years... but I'm not sure about the condition of the refrigerant still inside. Question: is it safe to yank it? Do I have to have a pro bleed/drain the system before doing so? What happens if I just start disconnecting hoses?

To do it environmentally safe, you would want to recycle the used refrigerant (R134 I presume). A typical AC shop can do it for you. Otherwise, as you start taking the hoses off, the system will bleed itself out until it is completely empty.

I see.

Thanks for the advice!

The car is on jackstands, intake already removed... immobile until the newer engine is in. Maybe I can find a mobile refrigerant recycler....

R 134a is an HFC, and according to the people that make the rules, is ozone frendly. But they are also the same people that put CFC's (R-12 mostly, a clorofluorocarbon, spelled wrong) in our spray paint, furniture polish, and underarm deoderant.
I think they may also be the same people, or at least the offspring of the people that gave us DDT, TNT, agent orange, when it suited there purpose.
I have a refrigerant certification. I think it means I agree that no one has any idea what is happening other than the government is taxing the consumer and doing god knows what with the money, and Dupont is making more money to do what they have always done...... make more money.
Don't spend too much time with your your conscience, they don't and never have.
