fuel pump relay, fuel pump, pulse sensor, and in your case, e30 ignition switch failure is common.
just places to start looking.
i used to have to pull the key back a little when the starter engaged to get ignition on my 88.
but it was a cabro and was exposed to florida weather.

yes, the ecm can't confirm that the engine is turning (input from pulse sensor)it will de-energize the fuel pump relay after a few seconds. It is a safety thing, if you had an accident or a broken fuel line you wouldn't wantthe fuel pump to continue to pump gas all over the place.

what about the external fuel pump!! if it is un plug would that cut the gas and to tell you the true when i connect the fuel pump direct from the relay spot i smell a little gas running but don't know from the driver seat if it is coming from the inside of the car or the engine compartment
