Auto tranny kickdown adjustment help

Just swapped a rebuilt 4 HP 22 auto tranny into my Dad's 89 325i. Car is driveable but the shifts are hard and jerky instead of smooth. Also it hangs on too long in the RPMS when shifting around 35-40mph and then shifts abruptly again around 50mph.
We've been adjusting the kickdown cable and it is slightly better than originally but still not very good. It took awhile to get the tranny fluid to read full on the dipstick but it is now full with new fluid. Is there a good guide somewhere that tells how to adjust the kickdown cable properly??
Thx,
--Scott
