94 325i Failed emissions
Hello folks. Great site, and great forum. Wayne is amazing.
Here's the scoop. I picked up my first BMW over the weekend from my brother in law. It's been sitting in his garage for the last few years, hardly being driven. I got it out of there for a song, but now realize how much work will need to be done. He hadn't drained any of the fluids, or set it up to be stored at all, so I drove it 400 miles on 3+ year old oil, and at least 50 miles on 3+ year old gasoline. The interior is rather moldy, and the soft top needs work, but it's a moving (fast) 325i convertible! Anyways, I failed emissions (not surprising, considering the circumstances). At 25/25, I'm getting HC ppm 177, when 120 is allowed, and CO% 1.71 when .67 is allowed. I took it home and changed the oil, and noticed something (I think it's an intake baffle) that had rotted between what looks like the fan/radiator and a large diameter plastic pipe coming up from the engine and behind the alternator. Is this "Intake Bellows, Air Flow Sensor to Throttle Body, only for cars with ASC+T, 325i/is/iC (9/93-95), M3 with 3.0L Engine (1995) " the part I'm looking for? Also, should I change the O2 sensor on the exhaust pipe before I bring it back to the emissions testing facility? Thanks for the great forum, and I look forward to any help you can provide. |

I've put in the air baffle, and the engine sounds a little quieter after I did that. I've also replaced the spark plugs with copper bosch plugs. I'm still getting a check engine light, and it still smells rich at idle some times. I've been told to try injector cleaner and high octane gas. Any other ideas?
