I've got a 1991 M40 E36 318i and was considering pirating some wheels from a E39 5 series to put on it, 255/50/15 spoke wheels. Am I going to need to perform any minor surgeries upon my car to get them to fit nicely?

I'm not sure - I've seen this done before, but I think you may need some spacers. The best bet is to borrow one wheel, fit it, and see what happens. Sorry I don't have any more info than that.
