car will not start
I have a 93 325i that will not start. I thought it was the battery so I replaced that and still nothing. I checked the relay and the fuse for the fuel filter and they are both good. I even swapped out the relay with a relay from a 318, just to be sure I switched both the fuel pump relay as well as the dme relay. I took out a spark plug and tested it for spark against the head to make sure I was getting a spark and I was, at least in the one cylinder I checked. When I turn the key it seems to crank and the fans and belts are moving. Thoughts? Are there fuses for the ignition and if so where are they? I checked the cover of the fuse box and there was not a fuse that was indicated for the ignition but I'm not too sure if there is a relay. I also changed out the fuel pump with a fuel pump from a different 318 so it is not that. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks a lot.

Motor needs fuel and spark, each delivered at the proper moment.
You said you had spark. A crude but effective way to check if you have fuel or not is to spray a bit of ether (starter fluid) into the intake. If everything else is working but fuel, the motor will run for a second or two on the ether, then quit. This is an easy test, Ether/Starter Fluid is available in spray cans and is cheap. CAUTION: ![]() Ether (starter fluid) is extremely flammable. Exercise extreme caution. Henry |

Thanks, I already tried that and got nothing. I cranked engine and buddy sprayed. Hopefully he did it correctly. Also, I just went to Napa and the guy said it could be the timing chain. Tell me that's not the problem.

If it was running when you shut it off, the issue shouldn't be the timing chain. Possible that something happened when you tried to start it, but not too likely. Can you get a code scanner on it? A 93 is OBDI (I believe), and while that isn't as good as the OBDII, info from that system should give you at least a starting point as to whats up. I'd be most suspicious of electrical gremlins - which are the worst kind.
![]() If you think it may be cam timing related, you can always pull the cam cover and check valve timing to verify that isn't the issue. A bit of a hassle, but not a huge deal. |

Car is running again. I switched back to ngk spark plugs, changed the air filter and taped up a crack in the air intake hose. Running for now.
