I have the same model/year car as yours but havn't had your problem yet. However since no one has responded I will give you what assistance I can.
There are two latches that you are going to have to release similtainiously. They are each about even with the inside edge of the headlight lenses. I would try to get to them through the front grills. The grills come out fairly easy but be careful not to break the 20 year old plastic that holds the spring steel clinches.

Also, do you know where the cable broke? if it did not break at the releases, and you can cut it and fish it out some how, you can strip the sheath back and pull the cable.

Not much help I know , but good luck with it.

Thanks for the response. I'll give that a try. I looked on my other car (95 M3) and can see what you're referring to with the two latches.

Open up hood on E36 with failed cable

It happened to me and I ended up sending a saws all at the hood latch pins - I couldn't come up with another alternative - we created sleeves that we put on either side of the saws all to protect the vehicle and cut them loose - pretty simple and then you'll need 2 new hoof latch pins

I replaced the hood cable after the fact, that was no party as I pulled the drivers side front fender and then it was reasonably easy

Can't access the hood pins or cable from the kidney grill openings, looks like I'll have t go the sawsall route.
