Electrical problem on a 316i. Help??

Hi

I've recently developed a strange electrics problem on my 02 316i which I've never had with any car at all previously.

I keep randomly having dashboard lights flash on, and the power dip in and out. It is more dramatic at night when you see the headlights cut in and out!
On occasions power completely cuts out although the engine is still running and the front and back lights stay on, I can't accelerate or rev (the throttle pedal does nothing)
I have to turn the ignition off and start the car up again to get control back. It can go days and miles and miles without doing this or it could do it several times in half an hour.
It seems very random and isn't exclusive to day, night, dry, wet, warm or cold.
From previous car experience I'm guessing it's not the alternator or the battery but I'm out of ideas as to what it could be.
Any help would be much appreciated?

Wyatt

Possible trunk fray.

Shot in the dark, but I heard frayed rear trunk wires can cause some pretty screwy electrical problems. Common problem for the electrical system.
