odd clunking sound
I have a 97 328i, auto with 167k. It has brand new struts, upper strut mounts, tie rod assemblies, Meyle metal ball joints with about 50k on them, M3 solid control arm bushings an Xbrace and a new stabilizer bar link. I have checked everything under the car ten times e.g. used a prybar to test the ball joints etc, I have also checked the exhaust for a broken hanger. Yet once in a while when I go over a bump I hear a metalic clunk, only on potholes or really rough roads. On smooth roads it handles perfect, super tight. I am begining to think it could be the driver's side motor mount. Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they prone to failure, if so what's the sign?
Another thought I had is maybe the front end is just too stiff now from the Meyle Metal Ball Joints, m3 soild control arm bushings and the Xbrace. A few years ago I but in polyurethane bushings on the stabilzer bar and went back to stock because it caused the sun roof to rattle. |

I would check the transmission mounts, my 92 325i with 162,000 miles and it made a clunk sound when going over bumps and rough roads I checked the mounts and found one transmission mount was completely broken and the other was half way split in the middle and there fairly cheap. Where does it sound like its coming from?

The left (drivers side) front. Its not the hollow deep sound like a tie rod end or ball joint it's more like a clank. Do the auto trans mount fail?

now that i think about it there is a bar that goes across the underside transmission and if a bolt is loose or if the rubber piece is cracked or missing that could cause a clunk
