E30 Engine swap problem?
 

I have just rejoined the forum, and I must confess, because I need some advice. So I apologize in advance for being somewhat opportunistic.

My 1985 5 spd 325e engine must be replaced. I have a replacement engine but have just discovered it appears to have come from an '84 with automatic transmission. So the question arises, can this engine be used without further modification. I have little experience with anything but manual gbox.

Swapping in the flywheel is no problem but, it looks to me like the crank is different, not having the pilot for the gbox input shaft.

So, does anyone have any good words? What can I, and can't I do?
