Wont idle
I have 97, 328i, 170k, auto trans, M50 intake manifold. I was getting codes 1188 and 1189 oxygen senors out of range. The car ran fine but now it wont idle unless the Mass Airflow Sensor is disconnected? I changed Mass Air Flow Sensors and no change.
I found a hole in the oil seperator hose and replaced it. The car starts but will not idle at all, it will idle and run relatively good with the Mass Air Flow Sensor disconnected but when I reconnect it; it will somtimes run and somtimes kill? There are no codes except the O2 codes; any ideas? |

Found the problem it was a broken hose that runs from the idle control valve to intake elbow. I did discover that mass air flow sensor trick. If you have a problem like that on the road disconnet the MAF and the car will run great in limp mode except the tranny shifts funky. Probably not good to drive it that way for a long time but it can get you home. The car never ran so good as a result because I found another hole in the hose that runs from the valve cover to the oil seperator.
I did a OBD1 conversion a couple of years ago whic may be the source of these problems because many of these things like idel control valve and oil seperator are kind of zip tied in place and it puts a little extra stress on the hoses etc |
