Question A/C from dash vents, and Heat via thumbwheel, Heat from defrost & Footwells...

As the title states:
1. Heat only from defrost vent, temperature dials settings yield no discernible affect.
2. Heat only from footwell vents, temperature dials settings yield no discernible affect.
3. Dash vents will blow airconditioned air, as well as varied temperature via the thumbwheel on center vent.
4. Temperature dials on control unit basically stay on max cold, because the meat on my legs is nearly cooked to the bone.

Does anyone have information on flap operation, or airflow? I'm not understanding why, for example, with A/C running, any fan position, airflow control (manual / cable actuated, mine is a '95) set to dash, cool air will blow from dash vents. However, turning the airflow control to anywhere else results in what feels like flames coming from the vents (exaggerating).

I've seen suggestions that include the External Temp Sensor, a bad fuse, the climate control brain, and the heater valve.

Hopefully someone on here has had the same problem and knows of a solution.

Thank you very much in advance.

I don't have the solution, but it sounds like you have a couple of different problems. I would start with the heater valve (unfortunate, since it is a PITA to get at).

Try unplugging the electrical connector and feeding it a 12V signal and ground to see if you can hear it snap open and shut when you apply signal. If not, it is gunked up inside and will need to be cleaned or replaced.

If the heater valve has to come out, removing the hoses from that valve is best done with the air plenum removed from the firewall. Removing that involves removing a couple of screws and pulling straight up. Sounds easy. It's not.
