87 325i Convertible

I noticed a leak yesterday coming from my thermostat housing. At first I thought there was a loose hose clamp since I have not ran this car much at all since replacing the timing belt, gear, water pump and all hoses last fall. It appears the leak is due to the themostat housing leaking. When I tried to move a small water hose, the whole thing pulled out of the thermostat housing. I have attached a pic of the piece that is coming out. Is this piece broken?
My car has a build date of June of 1987. Is there a difference in the 87 models? Pre September builds versus after September?
