M20B25 rebuild
Long story short I bought an '86 528e with a broken timing belt. After holding out hope that there would be minimal damage I pilled the head to find this:
![]() 20130304_191904.jpg by justinmdougherty, on Flickr So I was able to find a motor out of an '87 325is for $300. I have since disassembled the entire motor, cleaned it all up and brought the head to a machine shop. I received the head back today with a good bill of health and am ready to put it all back together. My question at this point is, what do I need to do to the bottom end in terms of setting up the pistons to ensure they will be in correct timing with the head when I install it. It would be one thing if I was just removing the timing belt and the marks were lined up prior to removal, but I am not sure where to begin after having the head off completely. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Justin |

There are timing marks on both crankshaft (on the block) & camshaft (on the cylinder head). Make sure that the first cylinder is at TDC and that the crankshaft is on the mark. Likewise, make sure that the camshaft is positioned on its own mark. You should then be able to assemble...
