2000 M Roaster starting problem

Leading up to not starting at all the battery would run down while parked so I would disconnect the ground cable to keep it from discharging when parked. Also sometime when I attempted to start it I would get a clicking sound and then the starter would finally crank after a few attempts. Now all I get is the clicking sound - the battery is fully charged. My next option is to take the starter off and test it. Does this sound like the next logical procedure?
