Z3 wiper problem, need help
Can anyone give me some ideas on solving my wiper problem? My 1997 Z3 wipers will only operate on high with no parking back to the bottom. I have no low or intermittent speeds. I have replaced the wiper motor and the wiper control module (blue box under the glove compartment) with certified working used items from Bavarian Auto Recycling. I have also replaced the wiper switch on the steering column with a new one from BMW. I replaced a relay under the driver's kick panel that the dealership could not confirm was part of the wiper system but was thought to be part of it. None of these items made a bit of difference and the wipers operate as before only on high. I have replaced all the original parts as the replacements made no difference. Any ideas of where to look next will be much appreciated.

It sounds like there are a couple of things going on here.
The wiper motor has no way of knowing where the wipers are. It knows only where it is. Assuming that the motor was turned on and off properly before installation, it was parked when you bolted it up, and the wipers will always park in the position where they were when you bolted on the new motor. I would unbolt the drive arm from the motor output shaft, cycle the motor on and off, put the wipers in park position, and bolt it back together. The only flaw in the answer above is if the problem actually lies in the wiring issue that is preventing you from having lower speeds. Assuming that your new motor, control unit and switch are not defective, we are down to checking individual wires. A wiring diagram would be really helpful if you can find one. |
Yea, I need to find a wiring diagram and go one at a time. The parking of the wipers has to be something different as I never removed the motor from the unit. I replaced the whole wiper motor assembly. It sure seems to me that it should be the fault of the control unit. However, I did try another one from Bavarian Auto which was a used one that they assured me was checked to be in working condition. I might get back with them and see if they will exchange it for another on. If I was sure that the control box was the culprit, I would buy a new one from the dealership. I jumped the posts on the wiper motor plug and the motor works in both high and low speeds with a jumper so I was pretty sure the motor was ok but the mechanic at the dealership was convinced otherwise. I really don't think there is any damage to wires and am more inclined to believe a relay or the control module is the problem. One other issue I notice is that the wipers on high quit for a few seconds after running for a few minutes in the rain.
