94 325i with single o2 sensor. Replaced sensor and reset the computer, after a few minutes of running rough it ran great again. 800 miles later it started running rough again. Exchanged the old sensor for a new one and started running smooth again. 1000 miles later same problem. Don't think I can exchange it a third time. Why is it going out so quickly? Each time I have been getting the 1221 code.

You could have an issue with sensor contamination. Check that there is no oil or coolant leaking into your exhaust system, ruining the oxygen sensor.
