E30 325 51mm struts on 316i?

Hi

I'm upgrading my suspension on my 1989 316i. I bought a full coilover set recently without realising the different strut sizes. The rear coilovers are on, however the struts on the front are 45mm, but the coilovers are for the 325 E30, so they're 51mm.

I want to know if i buy some struts from a 325 whether they'll fit my 316i so i can install the 51mm shocks on the front?

Any advice would be great,
