I've read online that you can't replace the emblem in the steering wheel in BMWs with air bags. I understand that BMW doesn't sell that emblem as a separate part, and that if you order from a BMW dealer, you have to get the entire airbag assembly. I found a non-OEM supplier online who sells the whole cover piece that the emblem is embedded in. Would that work? or it the back side of the emblem somehow attached to the airbag itself? It looks like you could just take off the cover with the warped/faded/damaged emblem, and pop this one on, but I just want to be sure there's not more to it than that before I order one.

You are not supposed to dissassemble and airbag. The airbag it self is folded in a specail way so it deploys as designed otherwise it could be dangerous. I'm guessing you could removed the cover without disturbing the airbad but here in the USA we get sued for stuff like that so I will not recommend it.
