Are manual and automatic rear axles really different?

RealOEM says that the part number for the rear axle on my '97 328 5 speed is 33211229428
And it says that the part number for the rear axle on a '97 328 automatic is 33211227585

Are they really different and not interchangeable? I can't see any reason why they would be different.
