I have a 1994 325is the car is eating alternators?

Hi Wayne. I have a 1994 325is the car is eating alternators. The only thing I have noticed is the excite wire when disconnected and key on shows 10.6v batt is full charge. When I connect the excite wire to the alt and turn key on it only shows 1.6v. Any thoughts

10.6 volts is low and may cause the alternator to overcharge. If the sense wire shows low voltage the voltage regulator will try to raise voltage because it thinks the car has a big electrical load. I am going to need to know what the voltage on the sense wire is with a good alternator and what is the output voltage from the large stud. It would also help to know what the amperage output is at idle.
