Question on ECU replacement

2004 BMW 325i with 120K miles...

In cold weather (below 40F), car will crank and start, but die within 30 seconds. Sometimes repeated cranking will finally run, but in limp mode only. If engine is warm, car runs perfectly (even in cold weather). On warmer days, car cranks and runs with no issues.

After much troubleshooting, my BMW dealer has determined that my ECU is going bad. Dealer says that I *cannot* simply swap with a used unit because the ECU is "matched to the vehicle's VIN." Dealer wants $1500 to replace and reprogram.

Is this true? This article Pelican Technical Article: BMW DME Motronic ECU Swap / Repair seems to indicate that I might be able to swap my uint with another 325i.

Is there no alternative to having the dealer do it? Or not driving in the winter

Thanks
