1994 BMW 318I Automatic Transmission Shifter Linkage Adjusting

I have a 1994 BMW 318i, i just swapped out transmissions. I replaced the old tranny with the same model GM Transmission. I'm wondering how to correctly set the wire that goes from the shifter to the atf pan. If i were looking under the car from the drivers side of the vehicle I would say that I installed the screw on the shifter linkage onto the lever (connected to the pan) with the lever all the way left ( or closest toward the engine and further away from the back of the car. Now i warmed up the tranny and it will shift but not into 1 2 3. I want to adjust the cable to where I am able to shift through all the gears. What should I do next?

Ps. I called a BMW parts specialist and they suggested that i post my question on this board.
