Question BMW E46 wing mirror problem

I took my car to a BMW mechanic with this problem. He failed to find cause or repair. It cost me for his time but still no solution.
Using the auto seat memory button results in the mirrors going to the allotted positions, no probs.
The near side mirror works ok when reverse is selected and dips to the curb, no probs.

The wing mirrors operate in random manner when trying to adjust using the internal adjustment device.
Moving left mirror to the left (Right hand drive car) is ok. Moving it to the right simply makes it move further left. It will not move right.
Moving the right mirror up or down results in it moving left to right and moving it right or left results in it moving up or down.
The movement up or down on the left mirror is reversed,
I give up.
