2001 318 tds compact Cabin Filter
Hello everybody, i was trying to locate the Cabin Air Filter according to the many instructions found on the internet, but when i removed the glove box and the air ducts the filter housing was not there.
Any idea where this filter is on the infamous 2001 318 tds compact? Cheers, Rocha. |

My quick Google search indicated that a 2001 318 compact should be an e46 rather than an e36. Hence, your cabin filter should be in the tray above the engine, attached to the top of the firewall. There are a couple of quarter-turn thumbscrews to remove the cover and the filter lifts out.

I just checked that, and it is not there.
Could it be that my car is not 2001? All the parts i bought said e36... |

The at-a-glance difference between an e36 and an e46 is the hood. If the kidney grills are part of your hood, it is an e46. If the kidney grills stay stationary when you raise the hood, it is an e36.
On an e46, there is a large tray beneath the grill holes at the rear of the hood next to the wipers. The tray attaches to the firewall with big Torx screws. It should hold a cabin air filter, but someone may have removed that filter and not replaced it. On the e36, as you know, the cabin filter is much tougher to get at. This page from my website gives instructions: Cabin_Filter |

Manolito, e36 it is, since the grills stay down.
When i took the glove box out last time, i think i was looking for the filter holder in the wrong direction... Ill try again tomorrow morning, thanks for the guide. |

The week I first posted those instructions, I got a message back from a fellow in New Zealand.
He said that he could not follow my directions at all - until it occurred to him that my steering wheel was on the wrong (US) side of the car. |
