Chain Tensioner Problem

I have a 1995 E-36 M-42 w/ 230,000 miles. I read several articles on replacing the lower chain tensioner but none mention which end goes back in first. The tensioner I pulled out is stuck in the cap and a bench vise and a large pair of vise grips can't separate the two. Obviously it can't work properly if stuck in the cap. It appears to be upside down. Right?
Also, there are two methods I have read for installation, compressed or uncompressed when reinstalling. Which is better?

Yes it seems upside down.
i’d say an uncompressed method is better. I don’t get why anyone would install a chain tensioner compressed and then wait until the oil gets in. Much easier if it was uncompressed. Just a tip though just remove the washer bottle. it’ll be much easier to get yourself in there.
