I just bought a 1998 BMW 318ti that was running rough no power, backfires, etc. I replaced the belts, spark plugs gapped at .035 and than gounded to the engine block and tested. I witnessed and good spark on all 4, spray nozzles, air filter, oil & oil filter, fuel filter and radiator. Now it won't start and backfires when attempting to start. Since I've confirmed all 4 cylinders are receiving fuel, spark and air, I am assuming the problem is being caused by a bad sensor and or a bad ECM?

If you have all items needed to start, it should. have you checked compression? It's possible engine timing is off.

Glad to have come across this question – I followed everything on this Pelican Technical Article: BMW 3 Series (E36) Oxygen Sensor Replacement but engine won’t start! I realized engine timing is off. Oh silly me!
