96 328ic auto transmission codes

Symptoms: Transmission went into safe mode while on drive. After stopping and shutting off it would not go into forward gears without reving up to around 3 grand and then would go into gear. Figured out if I just put it in M mode it will go right into gear 3rd or 4th only but still gets torque converter lock at speed so hiway gear ratio still fine.

Cleared all codes and reread after a couple of days of driving in M mode only.
Engine Codes:
233 and 234 cat eff bank 1 and 2

Transmission Codes:
42 Speed Signal N - Ab
100 Gear Monitoring

Is this pointing to the speed sensor on the back of the transmission?
If so, can it be changed while trans still in place?

Still wading through my automatic issues. I have disconnected the electrical connection at the back of the transmission by the output shaft to bypass the TCM. I have manual shift but only gears reverse and 3 and 4 but gear positions 2 and 3 or 4. Or to put it another way when I put it in 1 or 2 it starts in 3 and when I shift to 3 it goes into 4 so no difference shifting to 4 or D.
It really acts like it did in M mode before I disconnected the electrical connection, except then I had forward drive in 3 and D only, nothing in 1 or 2 and I had torque converter lock up at cruising speed.

Is this normal?
Do I have something internal or ??? preventing the lower gears?
Yes fluid level is full warm and running.

42 speed signal
100 gear monitoring

I'm sure I have a couple of new ones now though with electrical disconnected.

Gotta be somebody out there with some good insight and experience.
