E36 convertible question

I have a '98 328i convertible with power top. When I lower the top, the lid over the storage well doesn't clear the partially-lowered top at about mid-window.

If I push the top forward, it will clear and lower the rest of the way. I know this is a rather complicated assembly, but it appears something is not retracting the rear window area sufficiently.

Does this sound like an adjustment issue or perhaps a symptom of weak tension straps? I've looked without success for general troubleshooting steps, since I'd prefer to determine the issue before spending money on replacement parts that may not be required.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Paul

Sounds like you have a weak tension straps. My 97' 328ic did exactly the same thing... I went the cheap and effective route by using the flat latex tubing along side the the tension straps. You will have to adjust the flat latex tubing accordingly. You can actually do this without removing the head liner if you have the top partially open.

Good luck.

Thanks

Thanks for your input, Jay. Sounds as if I'm somewhat on the right track.

Guess I'll be looking up the procedure for replacing those straps.
