clunking noise
when i drive there is a clunking noise from the rear of the car almost like there is somthing hitting the driveshaft? anyone had similer problems or might know what it is>?
|
HI there:
Could be a couple of things: 1. Univ. joints 2. Really low oil in differential 3. (most likely) rear wheel bearings 4. (possibly) flex coupling in driveshaft Is the noise just in the back or generally to one side of the rear? If more to one side, almost definitely a wheel bearing good luck jeff |
well it clunks on and off its not constant if i floor it its not even really noticable, if i take left hand turns then it clunks a bit, a shop told me that it was probably a center bearing. they said it should be ok to drive on but the noise is annoing as hell, i jsut dont want to ruin anything,

Sounds like the upper rear shock mounts may be going bad. It's an easy fix

I think Jared is right on the money here!
Just pay attention how you take the felt inserts out in the quarter panel. They are a pain to get back in!! good luck jeff |
ok this is how it is now , most of the time i drive its making noise like a sound like somone is loudly tapping somthin with a hammer sort of; the faster i drive the faster the sound is and it kind of sounds like its coming from the rear driverside but i could be wrong. its definately from the rear though. it almost sounds like somthing is tapping somtimes against the drive shaft or the u joint. i'm trying to describe it as best i can to you

Now the question is, does the clunking sound increase with engine speed or vehicle speed? This can be either the driveshaft coupling on it's way out or the upper shock mounts.
|
yeah the faster you go the more clunk there is
|
It sounds as though this may be the driveshaft coupling, or guibo coupling. It's a common malady on the E30. What i would suggest is getting under the car and visually inspecting the rubber coupling that connects the driveshaft to the output flange .
