2011 328i trunk not opening sometimes,

Using the key fob or pushing the trunk release inside the car usually opens the trunk, there is no way to use a key in the trunk itself. Lately it has periodically stopped working, both w the remote and using the button inside the car. Is it the actuator that is starting to go bad? I will just replace it unless there is something else that is the cause? TIA

It has worked after repeatedly pushing the remote or inside release but it hasn't worked a time or two until we drove home and then tried it again. Can't leave anything in the trunk that we will need in case it we can't get it open! Thanks again!
