Questions on E36 M3 Engine Rebuild

I'm planning to rebuild the S52 engine in my 1998 M3 to stock specs after 240k miles. Reason is head gasket leak plus several oil leaks, thought I should just go through the whole engine. It is now on an engine stand in my garage awaiting disassembly.

Questions for anyone who has the time and inclination:

1. Do you know of a competent machine shop in Santa Fe or Albuquerque?

2. What should I let the shop do, vs. what I do? In particular I'm thinking of who should install piston rings, rod and crank bearings, rod bolts. Top end is more obvious.

3. What should I also replace, other than gaskets and other obvious wear items. Start is a goos example as it appears to be a PIA with the engine in.

4. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
Scott

Hi Scott - I've attached a link to our tech articles on the E36, each one lays out a step-by-step guide, with images and detailed text. If you're able and comfortable working on your M3, you can likely do a majority of the work yourself and save a lot of $$. If you're still going to be looking for a local mechanic, trying posting in our Classifieds section, you'll likely get more eyes there - be sure to include the city/state in the thread title. Hope this helps and best of luck!
