I have a 1995 E36 318is with 300K on it which has had a very sloppy gearshift stick for some time. Was shifting from 1st to 2nd when all of a sudden there was nothing there... so I coasted to a stop. With car on or off gearstick just moves around freely with nothing to engage to in any gear. I believe it must be stuck in 1st gear as I need to press in clutch when starting. What am I looking at here?..is stickshift simply disconnected/broken from linkage. I am sure nothing bushings, etc has never been replaced. If it has simply disconnected would it make the most sense to replace shifter and all bushings. Clutch was redone around 60K ago.

best bet is to inspect the shifter linkage and the connection tot he trans. Confirm it has excessive play or is detached, then repair as needed.
