Testing oil pressure gauge

1982 SC- I had observed that the gauge was really only utilizing the 3-5bar range so I replaced the sending unit. I still get similar readings and would like to rule out the gauge. When I pull the wire on the sending unit it pegs to 5. I have read that you can use a potentiometer wired in to try to sweep the gauge.

Can anyone give me a how to? Would a 500ohm potentiometer work for this and what is the sequence to hook it up?

Various threads site different values and methods, so I am trying to confirm.

Thanks!!

Will
