1982 Porsche 911 SC 3.0 Sunroof Coupe

Original steering wheel is available with the car.
Console has been recovered and is available with the car.
Original muffler in good condition is available with the car.
A good solid pair of steel heat exchangers and a new catalytic converter come with the car.

(Rocker panels and new rear parcel shelf have been reinstalled since these photos; headliner still has chalk from the install, just needs post-install cleaning)

It’s come time to let someone else enjoy White Bird, my ’82 911 SC. Bought it in early 2011, drove it every week or so for a year, then started a restoration, which is now complete. I enjoy driving it, but the restoration is most rewarding for me, so it’s time to pass this one along and find another one to work on, due to my age and an upcoming interstate move, and two recently discovered issues with the engine.

A broken valve spring was discovered on the #1 intake. Broken pieces were removed along with the valve spring seat; fortunately there was no damage to the engine, all broken parts being recovered; oil was drained and inspected clean and showed clean in the filter. I have not replaced the spring/seat.

The #3 cylinder exhaust bank has a broken front outer head stud.

I’d planned to replace the valve spring and get it running, but there’s still that broken head stud. So I’m selling the car as an ‘engine rebuild special’, since that’s the last major (or even) minor thing that would need to be done to it. So right now the engine/trans are just bolted in at the mounts, so would be simple to take it out for the rebuild. Please see the list below of work performed to date, all of which is documented with photographs and receipts.

The completed worklist covers a period of about 6 years. During that time the car’s been driven just enough to keep it healthy (@ every 2 weeks for a few miles, to bring it to temperature). Only on clear weather days. The rest of the time it’s been in the garage. So the completed work is still as if new. Here’s what’s been done since I bought it:

Full professional repaint from bare metal, using single stage Glasurit over epoxy primer, in original Grand Prix white. Beautiful paintwork performed by veteran Porsche body/paint man Len Stuart of New Jersey. (2016)

Engine tested by Porsche Shop in Broomall, PA ‘The Porsche Specialist’. Various compression tests were performed and engine was deemed in good condition despite mileage. Shop owner Kevin McConnell determined any rebuilding, top-end or otherwise, was not necessary at this time. A valve adjustment was performed at this time. This was at mileage of 172,835 at initial time of purchase. Current mileage as of September 2019 is 174374.

CIS injection system completely rebuilt and bench tested by CIS expert Tony Donato (boyt911sc see his many posts on this forum)

Tested for vacuum leaks
New Airbox
New vacuum lines, hoses
Rebuilt brake booster hose assembly
AAR tested good
WUR tested good
New airbox pop-off valve installed


New interior, including:

Complete headliner replacement (2015)
Reupholstered front seats(2014)
Dash pad, resurfaced with crack resistant 2-part urethane, then professionally recovered in high-grade vinyl fabric that matches existing knee boards/window ledges. (2016)
A and B pillars recovered in matching vinyl
Rear parcel shelf rebuilt with new hardboard and re-covered in matching vinyl

New brake calipers/pads and steel-braided brake lines front and rear. (2012)

Fuel tank stripped to bare metal, the POR-15 primer/topcoat, then several coats of Wurth Stone Guard, then Seymour MRO Gray paint to get the color right. Inside of tank was inspected and was clean with no residue build-up. (2014)

Floorboard, roof, and rear seat/quarter soundproofing removed/replaced (2015)

Sunroof was removed, cleaned, repaired and reinstalled with new hardware and seals. Cable channels were thoroughly cleaned of grease (2017); operates like new

Magnesium fan housing was removed, professionally blast medium cleaned, analyzed for cracks and repaired by Van Industries, Birdsboro, PA. Then it was prepped with chromate conversion (Chromic acid) and coated with zinc chromate primer + Seymour Gray finish coats to protect against corrosion (2014)

Alternator was rebuilt by Jebco, Riverton, NJ (2013)

Air boot replaced (2016)

Distributor rebuilt (2016)

All 4 brake calipers/pads replaced, (2013)

All 4 flexible brake lines replaced with Weltmeister wire braided lines (2013)

Windshield and seal replaced (2016)

All other window seals replaced (2016)

All new Maxilite 16” Fuchs replicas 7” front, 8” rear (2017)

New BF Goodrich G-Force Sport Comp 2 tires 205/26 front, 225/16 rear (2017)

Factory short shift installed; new shift linkage bushings; new shift coupler bushings; clutch cable adjusted (2017). The car shifts smoothly through all gears.

Transmission test driven by owner Kevin of the Porsche Specialist in Broomall, PA and deemed excellent. Very solid, precise shifting with no grinding.

Right rear wheel bearing professionally replaced (2018)

Front wheel bearings professionally adjusted (2018)

Period correct Blaupunkt Stereo radio/cassette (CR-2002 model) with original amplifier and remote control installed (2018); all function perfectly.

New Speakers were installed in the door panels (period correct size and grilles, with no tweeter).

CDI Unit was rebuilt through Pelican Parts service (2016)

New fuel pump mounting bumpers, new fuel lines installed (2015)

Interior ventilation system was completely dismantled and refurbished with new blower motor, new ducts, new valve ducts (trunk), one new heater control box (trunk).
New heater control panel (dash) and the control cables were taken apart, cleaned and lubricated. New heater hoses from Aircraft Spruce were installed at the flapper boxes coming off the heat exchangers.

Battery shelf corrosion due to battery leak was carefully addressed. Front pan was inspected and determined corrosion was localized with one @ 2” hole. All rust around the area was removed to clean metal, treated with POR-15. Preventive rust treatment was also performed on surrounding area. A custom exact fit patch panel was fabricated and installed (2015)

Transmission oil was recently replaced with Redline 20w/50, as recommended by my veteran Porsche mechanic.



Brad Penn engine oil has been replaced @ every 1000 miles.
