Yesterday I learned that the best way for me to check TDC (cylinder 1) for a timing belt job is not from the side but from the front of the car. This might be a result of being tall, but it was good to be able to turn the crank and see the indicators (camshaft gear, flywheel) line up as they're supposed to without having to move around the car.
