I have never used a clutch alignment tool with my 84 or 80 Porsche 911. I just center the clutch disc visually using the pilot bearing hole as a visual guide before I tighten down on the pressure plate to keep the clutch disc from sliding around. It has been 5 or 6 times now and never any trouble at all. Although I admit that I don't know about the 72T model.

From what i can tell, centering the clutch disc helps with putting the engine and tranny back together, and that is all. When the engine is in the car and you push on the clutch pedal the first time (even before the engine is fired), the pressure plate releases pressure on the clutch disc, the disc floats and slides on the tranny shaft (grease it up) and that is it.
