Dumb house moves
So I ran a spur for another outlet in the basement for the wine fridge. Wanted to relocate it. There’s a junction box with a pair of wires twisted together nearby that looked just the job.
It has power, so I add a 3rd wire and go on my merry way. Fridge moves, plugs in and lights up. Job done.
Not so fast...
Two days later I go into the basement from the garage.
The fridge is off.
No power to the outlet.
The light (same area as the stuff I tapped into) for UV for the AC is out and the outlet is reading 0v when I get at it with the multimeter.
All breakers have power. I tested every one...
Cue two hours of frantic tracing of wires through insulation. Get back to a switch for the other side of the basement can lights. They were on 2 sets of wires and I tapped into the join.
UV light had simply blown and the ‘dead’ outlet had a shield stopping me getting the meter in unless there was something in the ground. Sometimes it really is only the last thing you touched that is messed up.
Somewhat chagrined I extended my new wiring to the outlet I should have used and resolved to do better. Still need a new bulb for the Honeywell thing, but I’ll order that this week.
Anyone else done something that dumb recently? Misery loves company...
