Jim, check the wiring of the potentiometer inside your wiring harness. I've read that many guys have had a failure here because the thin wirewrap wire that is used attach the pot to the wiring in these harness adapters together break over time, causing havoc with low rpms and idle. If not that, you could always pull out the hot wire element from the meter, and use some brake cleaner to clean off any oil from the K&N that may have contaminated the element.
