push or pull (clutch in VW-->911 transplant)

I'm confused.
I have a 1974 911 with a dead engine (bought it that way). I need it running, so am putting in a 2.0l vw engine, as discussed under a different heading. I have a spare '71 tranny from another project (that I had intended to use the 2.0 with anyway) and had understood that it would work with the VW flywheel, clutch and throwout bearing.
I don't understand which tranny is push, which is pull. The 915 I removed had a clutch cable, that pulls on the arm to pull the throwout away from the tranny. The 901 appears to have a fork that must be PUSHED to do the same thing, but the fork has only smooth tines, nothing to interact with the bearing. Where does the bearing go?

The 915 also had a kind of bellcrank thing on the left side, I have not figured out what it is for but it was not attached to anything. Is this a provision for a pushrod that was not in use? Is this car more messed up than I thought?
