Question verrrry rough running cold trouble

i can usually troubleshoot others along this line pretty well, just wanna get other opinions i may have missed...

since it's gotten cold here the past month or so, my stock '74 CIS with hand throttle (yes, know how to use) has run very rough after start...idle hunts up and down (sounds rich to me, but i would have guessed cold to cause mixture to go lean as cold air is more dense than warm?). car bucks, sometimes like mad (have to press clutch in to stop it) for several minutes until warmed up, then smooths. the past two times i've driven it, it almost doesn't ever completely go away (temp only getting to ~ 150 in this cold) and my 'final' idle when i've completely let out the hand throttle is high now...1400-1500 instead of my adjusted 950 at normal operating temp.

car also is making garage smell of fuel, although i've seen no obvious leaks and this may be a fuel cap gasket type issue, getting ready to go outside and check that...

does everybody vote for a too rich mixture? does the screw drift over time or the change in weather to cold cause a rich to occur? other things i'm considering checking are my points (over a year old and usually only good for 10-15k) and my plugs haven't been changed in over 2 years. i've been incredibly busy lately and my maintenance has is showing it!
