Now that the subject has turned to destructive tooling, I can chime in. I used a rotary sander, large or small diameter disk, medium grit. A drum sander will work as well. Wear face protection and watch where the sander goes. Move the sander around as it will generate heat if left sanding the same location. The high speed rotary bit could be a little tricky to control near nice paint. Be careful and use a steady, supported grip.

These methods expose bare metal, so seal the metal after trimming.
