A small, pencil type is all you need for wires up to about 12-14 gauge. In my experience (not recent), the battery type ones do not work well, so I recommend a corded, 115ac one. If you put some solder on the tip of of the iron and bridge the gap between the tip and what you are soldering, you get better heat transfer. If you get a large, gun type, just be careful not to solder near any electronic gets too hot and will damage them. Weller make good soldering equip and their parts are more commonly available.
