I'm a huge fan of black or dark gunmetal grey wheels. Had my son's wheels powdercoated with a metallic black(ish) and they look phenomenal. I'll see if I have any pics and maybe post later.
(I know you said you want to paint/DIY but I've gone both routes and was very happy with the money spent on powdercoating).
