i tend to think that the battery wouldn't really receive all that much extra cooling benefit in the way you've described. i would still suspect the regulator from the description of the headlights and the swinging tach. but of course, if it is overcharging intermittently as the case seems to be, it could risk overcharging and damaging the battery.
do you have a digital voltmeter? hook it up while the car is idling to the ciggy lighter and watch and see if the 14 volt system fluctuates while running. or remove alternator and get it bench checked...
