Ok Eric,......I think I see the problem.

You are following the Haynes procedure, except for one important step, ok maybe a couple of steps.

Somewhere in the procedure for engine removal it will instruct you to remove the crossmember. I realize you want to go out the top and so it would seem like the crossmember wouldn't be in the way. you are painfully discovering, it is still in the way!!!
I'm not saying its impossible to yank it up out of there......but its not going to be easy and you will probably break/bend something in the process.
75 914 - Undecided.
80 931 - Gone, but not forgotten.
72 914 - old toy- sold.
And a whole bunch of German scrap metal shaped like 924's.

Old enough to know better, and stupid enough to do it anyway!
