Drop the cross member. This has to come out wither you take the engine out the top or the bottom.

Unbolt the engine mounts. Don't unbolt the spindles from the struts. Drop the A-arms leaving them attached to the spindles. Mark the rear A-arm bracket where it rests on the chassis so you can get it back in the same location. Yes you have to unbolt the steering link at the steering rack. Take the bolt all the way out and don't loose it. You also have to unbolt the sway bar supports at the chassis.

Only takes a few inches for the pan to clear the cross member to pull the engine out the top. Now if you plan to drop it out the bottom disconnect the tie rods and A-arm ball joint to drop the cross member completely out of the way. Leave the struts and the spindles attached to the car.
